Feeding your baby solid foods is an exciting and important part of the growing process for your child.
Pediatricians and others generally recommend beginning to introduce foods other than breast milk or formula between the ages of four months. The latest recommendation from the World Health Organisation is to wait until baby is closer to six months, to give him more time to develop control over muscles in his tongue and throat.

But a lot of it depends on your baby, and it’s important to watch for the signs that your baby is ready to try solids. Once he can sit up in his high chair, and starts showing interest in your food or opening his mouth when you offer food, then it’s a good time to try introducing solids. Of course, it’s also important not to force baby to try solids before he’s ready; if he turns away when you try to offer it, it might not be the right time.

Midway through your baby’s first year is also a good time to start introducing solids because at this age, babies start needing more iron and other nutrients than they will get from breast milk and formula alone. You’ll probably also start noticing that your baby is not satisfied only by his milk feeds, which is another sign that it’s a good time to try solids.
When you start introducing first baby food , there are a few guidelines to keep in mind:

• Make sure you’re still breast or bottle feeding your baby. It’s best to wait a couple of hours after a milk feed, so your baby is relaxed when you introduce solids.
• I recommend starting with a spoonful of baby rice or baby cereal, mixed with 8-10 spoonfuls of milk to create a very watery consistency. As baby gets used to eating this, you can start adding more cereal to create a thicker food.
Once your baby is used to eating solids, you can start introducing other foods. At this stage, try pureeing sweet potatoes, squash, baby clothes, broccoli, apples, bananas, and pears, to allow your baby to try different tastes. I’d recommend starting with vegetables first, so that baby doesn’t develop a taste only for sweet foods. Doing this will help him be less picky later in life.
Remember, baby shoes, at this age, milk should still be his main source of food, and it’s an important part of bonding with you as well – so don’t stop milk feeds.
If you are pureeing your own foods, be sure to store any excess food in BPA-free containers, and carefully label them with the food and the date you made it. You can refrigerate or freeze excess food and carefully heat it in the microwave when you’re ready to feed your baby. Remember that food doesn’t last as long in the fridge as it does in the freezer. Labelling is also important so you can keep track of what your baby has eaten if he’s shown any signs of allergic reactions.
When it’s time to feed baby, it’s important to make sure he is comfortable. You can put him in his favourite high chair, or even in your lap. Make sure you’re not wearing clothes you want to keep clean, and that baby has a bib and you place a towel on the floor for easy cleanup.

Feeding is going to be messy!

You’ll also want a soft, baby care, BPA-free spoon suited to your baby’s mouth. One of my favourite tools that I used with my own kids is the Boon Squirt Baby Food Dispensing Spoon. This spoon is great for home or on the go. You can put the baby food in the soft dispenser and just squeeze it to get the perfect amount to feed your baby, with much less mess. A lid makes it easy to toss in your diaper bag for taking baby out.
Finally, I just want to recommend that you pay attention to your baby during feeding times, and that you stay relaxed and happy during feeding, because baby will pick up on your mood. When your baby starts turning his head away or pushing the food from him, it’s best to stop trying to feed him. Remember, babies eat very little at this age.
And keep a smile on your face and have fun. Feeding is an important part of your baby’s development, and you’ll want to enjoy every moment of it too.
